Dutch comfort in Hampshire with ‘Kingspan TEK’

Energy-efficient TEK system home

Building the home of their dreams was a breeze for the Burdon family after they used the Kingspan TEK® Building System to form the walls and barrel roof of their new Dutch barn styled house.

Clad in feather-edged boarding, the New House was designed in collaboration with Chartered Surveyor Malcolm Hutchings and includes four upstairs bedrooms and traditional features such as a wood burning stove. To realise these plans the owners wanted a building solution which was straightforward to construct and would keep running costs low. This led to the selection of this innovative building system, as Kim Burdon explained: “Before settling on the final design we spent several months collecting information on new build methods from magazines and trade shows. Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) really floated to the top because of the ease of build combined with excellent thermal performance.

The Kingspan TEK® Building System comprises high performance SIPs which allow buildings to easily achieve U-values of 0.16 W/m2.K and below, whilst their OSB3 facing and unique jointing system keeps air loss to a minimum. For New House, delivery partners Glosford Timber Solutions designed and factory cut the panels to the project’s specific requirements, including the feature barrel roof. Kim Burdon discussed the process: “Glosford Timber Solutions took our original plans and came up with the idea of slim longitudinal Kingspan TEK® Building System panels laid up together to form a curved roof over the structured walls. This solution was particularly appealing as it required no need for extra internal beams leaving us with beautiful internal barrel ceilings upstairs.”

Dream home in TEK

To form a consistent curve, a triple layer 6mm plywood skin was installed on battens outside of the Kingspan TEK® Building System. The waterproof membrane and Zinc roofing were then fitted. The offsite cutting process, used on all Kingspan TEK® projects, ensured a predictable construction with the shell of the 197 m2 building erected in just two weeks, ready for main contractors Flint Construction to complete the build.
