School wins race against time with Kingspan Tek

The Kingspan TEK Building System of structural insulated panels has been installed as part of a modern, energy efficient classroom block at Boyle and Petyt Primary School in the Yorkshire Dales, helping the school to meet its strict funding deadline with a 9 day erection programme.

 

Architect John Wharton collaborated with Roger Tiffany Ltd on the project, creating asensitive design which provides 100m2 of additional pre-school space, whilst also complying with the tough National Park planning requirements. With a tight working budget, it was essential that the project was delivered both on time and on cost. Kingspan TEK Delivery Partners, SIPS@Clays LLP, helped to ensure that was achieved by designing, fabricating and fitting the Kingspan TEK Building System to form the roof and walls of the block.

 

Kingspan TEK Building System panels incorporate a fibre-free insulation core sandwiched between two layers of OSB/3. The panels are pre-cut to each project’s specification, limiting on-site alterations. This bespoke approach, combined with the panelised system construction, helped to ensure a fast and predictable installation programme. SIPS@Clays LLP began site work on the 15th of December and completed the erection in time for Christmas. With the SIPS@Clays factory also being located near the school, this ensured transport mileage was kept to a minimum.

 

The Kingspan TEK Building System supports a wide range of finishes, and to further reduce the construction programme length and cost, John Wharton specified an attractive larch timber cladding which will weather to a light grey.

 

In addition to the savings achieved during the construction phase, the high level of fabric performance provided by the Kingspan TEK Building System should also help to minimise heating requirements. The high performance 142 mm thick System panels can achieve U-values of 0.20 W/m2.K and below, whilst their unique jointing system can reduce air leakage levels to as little as 1 air change per hour @50pa.

 

Architect, John Wharton commented: “The combination of the financial economy, the need for a sustainable low energysolution, and the requirement for all the work to be completed by April 2015 led to the specification of the Kingspan TEK Building System. The System provides very high levels of insulation and airtightness and the roof panels provided a solid base for the photovoltaic array”.

 

Both the Kingspan TEK Cladding Panel and Kingspan TEK Building System panels are now available in a 172 mm thickness, delivering U-values of 0.16 W/m2.K or better, without the need for additional insulation. The manufacturing facility where the panels are produced carries both FSC® (FSC®-C109304) and PEFC Chain of Custody certification. As standard, the OSB/3 facing of the Kingspan TEK panels is PEFC certified at 70%.
