The world’s first architectural salvage fair, Salvo is the destination for the rare, and unique. Salvo fair exhibitors bring a diverse mix of architectural, garden and decorative antiques, salvage, reclaimed building materials, midcentury, vintage, upcycled and industrial.
Thornton Kay runs Salvo, prior to which he ran one of the UK’s earliest salvage businesses, and in the 1970s he founded Comtek, the first holistic environmentally sustainable fair. To highlight the commonly overlooked environmental benefits of salvage and antiques, Thornton Kay and Sara Morel of Style Salvo have partnered for this year’s Green Living theme. Salvo 2017 will feature ancient and modern eco-friendly products, sustainable fashion, craftspeople and zero waste restaurant Silo.
100,000 old doors are saved by the UK architectural salvage trade every year, but more than 2 million are thrown away. In the UK, we manufacture about 2 billion bricks a year and destroy about the same number in demolition. Every 12 bricks embodies the energy of a gallon of petrol and while there is a big push for recycling, there is little push for reuse. Expect stands featuring reclaimed bricks, doors, fireplaces and flooring, salvage about off-grid living, and eat ‘Pirate’ chocolate, Silo’s greatest ecological achievement.
aa an organisation, Salvo tries to encourage fair trade and eco-friendly activities. Putting dealers in touch with each other, and with private and professional buyers. Salvo provides information about architectural and garden antiques, reclaimed and recycled building materials, demolition salvage, craftspeople and other information relating to buildings, gardens, bygones, transport and machinery. Salvo runs the annual summer Salvo Fair at in the grounds of Sir William McAlpine’s private estate, Fawley Hill, Henley-on-Thames, and occasionally Salvo has zones at other fairs.
Weekend tickets for a 2 course Silo at Salvo lunch include fondant made with transatlantic emission free organic chocolate… Sailed from the Dominican Republic using only the wind and a crew of badass sailers (pirates). Washed down with a choice of Old Tree drink including vintage cider with botanical infusion.
