Kingspan Optim-R helps historic Royal Military Academy

The former Royal Military Academy overlooking Woolwich Common finds a new place in history with its stunning restoration, featuring Kingspan Optim-R Flooring System.

The Grade II* listed building is being lovingly renovated by Durkan to create prestigious, high specification houses and apartments. The developer consulted closely with Historic England to create an estate which is sympathetic to its origins, whilst simultaneously meeting the standards of contemporary living. The Academy comprises beautiful homes with original features, a fitness suite on-site, and enchanting surroundings that contain private courtyard gardens, boulevards, parks and ancient woodland.

Durkan commented: “We chose the Kingspan Optim-R Flooring System to allow us to make the most of the available space. The original beam and block flooring limited our ability to dig down. Installing the Kingspan OPTIM-R Flooring System in a 30mm thickness allowed us to maintain existing threshold levels whilst also achieving excellent thermal performance. Kingspan Insulation’s expert technical team also provided us with design drawings, calculations and specification sheets that helped to simplify the installation and keep the thickness of the insulation to a minimum.”

The Kingspan Optim-R Flooring system is an optimum performance insulation solution that comprises rigid vacuum insulation panels with a microporous core. These panels offer an outstanding thermal conductivity of 0.007 W/m.K as a result of their gas-tight envelope, and are covered by LABC Registered Details. The vacuum insulation panels are accompanied by rigid thermoset insulation infill panels which can be used where the remaining dimension to infill is below 300 mm, or can be cut to fit around problem areas such as penetrations or load bearing walls.

Kingspan OPTIM-R panels that are 20 – 40mm are also certified by BDA Agrément®,when installed to Kingspan Insulation’s recommendations. This can help to streamline Building Control processes, reducing construction time and costs.
