Citrus Building gains prestige with LABC Award

The Citrus Building in Bournemouth, which Terence O’Rourke provided the design, architecture and planning consultancy for in association with Morgan Sindall Construction has won a Local Authority Building Control (LABC) South West Building Excellence Award.

Bournemouth Council Building Control nominated the curved, mixed-use development which was led by the Bournemouth Development Company, comprising 64 new homes and ground floor restaurant, Turtle Bay, in the ‘Best High Volume New Housing Development’ category of the awards.

The LABC South West Building Excellence Awards celebrate outstanding craftsmanship, technical innovation, sustainability and high performance in building design and construction.

The Citrus Building was included in Terence O’Rourke’s master-planning vision in Bournemouth as ‘the 21st century garden city beside the sea’, which has seen over £100 million of development in the town get off the ground. The uplifting and bright building has an orange, yellow and green colour scheme and has made a big impact in rejuvenating the Horseshoe Common area.

The award category looks for developments that show a great working relationship between LABC surveyors and people responsible for the building work. Developments should have used innovative construction techniques or materials, met and overcame challenges and difficulties and used technical problem solving to meet the complexities of the project. The developments are also recognised for use of energy efficient construction methods, renewable technologies, and the long-term sustainable prospects of the building, including management of water and measure to conserve water resources.

Simon Walker-Bircham, associate director at Terence O’Rourke, said: “The team at Terence O’Rourke was very proud to be nominated by Bournemouth Council Building Control and to be recognised as a partner with the Bournemouth Development Company. When it was announced that we had won the category we were thrilled. This development has proven that great co-operation between local authorities, developers, planners and architects can provide a great result for a community.”

Winners of each category from the South West Building Excellence Awards will go on to compete with other regional winners at the LABC Grand Finals, held in London in the Autumn.

As Bournemouth Borough Council’s private sector partner in rejuvenating Bournemouth town centre, Terence O’Rourke has provided town planning, urban design, master planning, architecture, geographic information systems and graphic design services. Last year, the Madeira Road transformation, also led by the Bournemouth Development Company, also won a Building Excellence Award for best public service building.
